The first Brunel Digital Games Postgraduate Conference shares a theme with the name of the new game design and studies course: "Theory and Design". Postgraduates from all fields and all locations are encouraged to submit papers to what is already proving a diverse and interesting panel of events.
Four guest speakers will be delivering keynote speeches:
Ian Livingstone
Ian Livingstone is Creative Director of Eidos Interactive. He founded Games Workshop , the first UK distributors of Dungeons and Dragons, with Steve Jackson in 1975 before launching the best-selling Fighting Fantasy gamebook series, which is currently being republished. He joined Eidos in 1995, and was Product Acquisition Director when Tomb Raider and its sequels were released. He has won a BAFTA and an OBE for services to the Computer Games Industry.
Barry Atkins
Barry Atkins is an academic currently teaching games design and theory at University of Wales, Newport. He wrote the pioneering More Than a Game in 2003, is a frequent contributor to Game Studies journals and recently co-edited Videogame, Player, Text with Tanya Krzywinska.
Tanya Krzywinska and Esther MacCallum-Stewart
Tanya Krzywinska and Esther MacCallum-Stewart will be giving a joint presentation on the new MMO Lord of the Rings Online. Tanya is course convener of the Brunel Digital Games MA (see 'about us' for more biographical information). Esther is a research fellow at SMARTlab, University of East London. She is also on the board of DiGRA, has published articles on Roleplay, War and Digital Media. Both Tanya and Esther have contributed to MiT's forthcoming World of Warcraft Reader.
